What Sports Taught Me About Balancing My Life
Growing up in San Diego, I was raised in a family of athletes. My Dad had a stint in the NFL, my brothers played in the NFL and the MLB and my mom is an avid golfer. Me, I grew up playing competitive soccer. In college, it was my dream to become a TV anchor but there was something about having to leave San Diego and relocate to a very small town that was not so intriguing. I majored in Communications at USC and was introduced to an opportunity to minor in Sports Journalism. It was the most hands on practical education one could get, and quite fun. So it made sense post college to dive into the media industry – where I ultimately ended up working with the NFL and MLB among other media outlets. I guess you could say that I have sports in my blood. I love the team work in sports. I love leadership in sports and yes, the competitive part does not hurt.
After a successful 21 year career in media – where I loved what I did – things changed. I saw my two sons grow in what seems a blink of an eye. All of a sudden they were 6 and 8 and I had missed so much. 7 years ago, I left the media industry. I took some time to reevaluate my life and what I learned was my “athletes” needed me. Truthfully, I needed them just as much. What I knew was that after almost a year off – I needed to get back to work. I wanted to get back to work. But I knew I could not go back to corporate. I needed flexibility in my schedule that would allow me to balance my personal and professional lives; something many women struggle with. Additionally, my husband travels quite extensively for his profession – and despite having a loving nanny and wonderful parents to help – my kids needed me at home.
So, I met a long time family friend, Heidi Bartolotta for coffee and that is where she introduced me to Moms Making Six Figures. I will celebrate my fifth anniversary with the company this May, and I have so much to be thankful for. I have been able to design my new career around my children’s very busy school and sports schedules. Now 12 and 14, my boys play a ridiculous amount of sports. But they love it – and of course, it’s all moving too fast for me. I’d like to slow down time. That said, for the last five years, it’s been me picking them up from school daily and driving them to baseball, lacrosse, football, basketball and for the younger years, my sport – soccer.
I have truly been able to participate in watching them grow and have been present. My oldest just received his acceptance to his future high school – where it’s his goal to be a 3 sport athlete. I love that he not only has big dreams, but the work ethic to do it, and keep his grades up too. That’s what being an athlete has taught him. I’d like to say that he has learned from my husband and I that you can’t just have big dreams – you have to work hard to achieve them. I get that team work being a part of the great team at Moms Making Six Figures.
Yes, I am home. I left corporate. My children see me work. They see that we have flexibility to travel. I plan to enjoy every minute of the next five years, because I will blink again – and they will be off at College.
“Moms” is a marketing company that represents a U.S.-based manufacturer. Though based in San Diego, many of the nearly 90 women who work with Moms live all over – West Coast, East Coast, Midwest, and the South. Of these women, about half work 25-plus hours per week. Their only qualifications are that they’re self-motivated, hard-working, and coachable.
I invite interested women to reach out to learn a little more about who we are and what we do. We would love to help bring you home too!
