Why a “Dream BIG” Mindset Can Get You Farther, Faster
Ask your 5 year old what they want to be when they grow up and be prepared for what may seem like a “ridiculous” answer. An astronaut or a movie star, really?!
Remember when you were younger and everything seemed possible? What happened?
Somewhere along the way, between our jobs and being moms, we let go of that dream big mindset. “Get your head out of the clouds; you’re being unrealistic!” we may have told ourselves (or even had someone else tell us).
Put aside all the negative thoughts you’ve been conditioned to believe about the pointlessness of dreaming big for a moment. We at Moms Making Six Figures want to make the case for why you should dream big. There really are some big benefits to having lofty goals.
Dreaming Big: The First Step to Success
Think about it. Without a big dream, you have nothing to work towards—and probably won’t achieve success, or achieve it as quickly, or reach as high. Sure, you may climb the corporate ladder, but chances are you’ll peak at what probably isn’t your highest potential. Why? Because you won’t challenge yourself.
“Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so you shall become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall, at last, unveil.” – James Allen
Big Dreams Force Us to Make Long-Term Changes
Bringing that big goal to fruition requires us to make changes in our lives. Ask yourself, “What am I doing now that my future self will thank me for?” Or, “If I continue doing what I am doing, will I achieve my goal, and by when?”
Think of “now” as the foundation for your goals. Is your foundation equipped to support the end goal? If not, you know what changes need to be made in order to support that end goal. Do you want to buy a new home by the end of the year? Does your current foundation (job, income, credit rating) make this goal feasible? If not, a career move or some credit repair work might put you where you need to be.
These proactive changes are also likely to filter into the rest of your life, and self-improvement is always a good thing.
A New World of Opportunities
Speaking of making changes, working towards these goals will likely open up doors you probably never knew existed! For example, you may know that your goal is to work from home, but you’re unsure of how to make that happen. In your efforts to find a way to do this, you will push your boundaries, and possibly meet new people who can introduce you to new opportunities.
All of these opportunities would not be possible if you hadn’t dared to dream in the first place. You’d probably be stuck in your 9 to 5 job, missing out on what could have been.
Dreaming Big and Achieving Your Goals: Changing Your Mindset
Many of us dream big already, but not as many of us act on those dreams. The difference between those who dwell in the dream world and fail to realize their dreams and those who live in the real world and follow a plan to achieve their dreams is often their mindset.
The number of naysayers in your life is likely to outnumber those that encourage you to think big and chase your dreams, so your mindset really makes a huge difference. Here’s how you can stay positive and focused:
1. Constant Positive Reminders
From motivational quotes or images stuck on the fridge to more detailed vision boards, surrounding yourself with positive visual reminders can help keep you focused on the goals you are working to achieve, and why.
2. Create a Plan
Thinking big is great, but achieving your dreams requires a plan. Brainstorm ideas that will get you closer to fulfilling your dreams, and put them in a logical order of progression. A plan will help you feel less lost and will make the dream feel more within reach.
3. Surround Yourself With Like-Minded People
Your circle of friends can mean the difference between realizing your big dreams and not. Surround yourself with people who are inspiring, encouraging, positive, and even possibly successful in what they do. With a healthy support system, you are more likely to stay focused and your path to success will be less daunting.
Dream Big: No Limits!
When you lower your goals to something more “realistic” or “achievable,” you lower your potential for success. Don’t be discouraged by the enormity of your dreams—be curious and take a risk!
Take inspiration from your kids’ seemingly outrageous dreams, and encourage them to continue to dream big. There is power in your thoughts; they can take you from the mundane status quo to out-of-this-world possibilities. It’s never too late!
“So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.” – Christopher Reeve
